Free-range parenting, in contrast to “helicopter” parenting, fosters independence. It encourages children to figure things out for themselves rather than overprotecting them.
As much as free-range parenting allows children to solve problems and adapt without much assistance or monitoring, this might be risky because children aren’t totally ready to make decisions by themselves.
When it comes to free-range parenting, our staff providing child care in Riverdale, New York recommends that parents incorporate these two points:
- First, allowing children to sort through some of their own challenges fit for their age is the first step in treating them with respect. In the early years, parents must supervise and guide their children, then transition into a coaching role as they near adulthood.
- Secondly, allowing our children to discover their own and other people’s boundaries is fundamental. An independent child alone isn’t enough; it’s also important for them to learn to love, serve, communicate, and live harmoniously with other people.
There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach, which is why applying this formula to all situations can become tough. The right approach depends on the child’s needs, wants, personality, and maturity because each kid is unique.
It is our belief at Renanim Preschool and Summer Camp, a preschool in Manhattan, New York, that all parenting methods have their pros and cons. Making sure that a child develops into a fine adult is what matters.
